ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

José Farinos is a contemporary figurative painter whose work blends bold color, expressive figuration, and symbolic imagery to explore the paradoxes of everyday life. His paintings draw from familiar visual language—figures, objects, and signs—reconfigured into unexpected relationships that reveal humor, tension, and contradiction.

At first glance, his compositions appear direct and accessible, yet they unfold into layered visual narratives shaped by ambiguity and irony. Rather than offering fixed meanings, Farinos constructs open-ended images that invite multiple interpretations and encourage the viewer’s active participation. The result is a body of work that is at once playful and unsettling, simple in appearance yet conceptually complex.

Farinos’ artistic perspective is informed by his background in architecture. He studied at the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Spain and at the University of Miami, where he earned a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning. Today, Farinos is an active member of the Martin Artisans Guild and exhibits regularly at the Palm Room Art Gallery in Sewall’s Point. He is also a Premium Artist Member of the Saint Lucie Cultural Alliance and a member of Martin Arts and Art Associates of Martin County.

His work has been exhibited widely across Florida, including at the A.E. Backus Museum and Gallery in Fort Pierce, the Vault Gallery in Fort Pierce, the Court House Cultural Center in Stuart, the Bailey Art Gallery in Hobe Sound, Pedrido Arte Gallery in Coral Gables, and the MIDFLORIDA Event Center in Port St. Lucie. His exhibitions have received multiple juried awards, including a First Place award at the Palm Room Art Gallery’s 2025 “‘Tis the Season” exhibition.

I believe that creating art or being able to appreciate it, in any of its many forms, is one of the most rewarding experiences that a person can have. That is why I paint. 

I am inspired by images of everyday life as much as by contemporary tendencies in art, including graffiti, abstract impressionism, or figurative representations, and no matter how detailed or abstract my paintings are, I hope that the viewer will experience some emotion beyond the surface of my images.
